There's a Shinto shrine in Harajuku with a sort of forest park around it. In the places where it grows thin, bamboo walls block out the city. Just underneath the sounds of nature, a silence holds the distinct energy of feudal Japan. A sort of intense seriousness and sense of honor made whole and carried by the serenity of a waterfall ( Read more... )

Are you doing a deshi program (is hombu helping you with housing and such) or did you just come over on a tourist visa and decided to stay in tokyo the whole time?

Got a guesthouse 25 minutes from the dojo by bicycle rather than doing an uchi deshi program.

Any information on the web about that? I currently live in japan, in hiroshima actually. When my contract is up I would like to spend some more time at hombu training and maybe get my nidan. Any info is appreciated! thx!

I think the deshi program requires a letter of introduction and a solid time commitment, and I couldn't come for more than 3 months, so I just sidestepped it and found a place of my own. Took me two weeks living an hour from the dojo (but still getting there pretty regularly) before I found my guesthouse. That was probably the hardest part.

There's a registration fee of around 80 bucks and then a monthly fee of around 100 bucks (USD, so take that times 105ish for yen). With that you can take regular classes and beginners classes, both of which are usually taught by shihan. There are 5 regular classes a day. The schedual is on their website.
