I'm really sorry to hear that, D. Regardless of how well you can rationalize it, the loss of a loved one is always very hard. I lost my father a few months ago, and it was much harder than I ever thought it would be. I had always been able to rationalize my feelings about death (either my own, or somebody elses), but rationalize it to a level of about %95. But when it came to my own father's time (and he was closer to me than anybody else in the world except my mother) that remaining %5 just JUMPED OUT at me, and I couldn't deal with it at all. And I'm STILL having trouble dealing with it. It's inevitable. But still, it definitely forces you to crystalize your beliefs about the whole thing. It stops being an academic or an 'abstract' idea.
