that's like saying if you don't like the Patriot Act then go to Zimbabwe. Just thought I'd tell you.
I specifically said that the school doesn't have a legal obligation to comply to the students' wishes, but they get completely out-of-hand with the punishments and I think they should know it.
Uh, no, it's not like saying "If you don't like the Patriot Act, then go to Zimbabwe."
There's a difference between a small private institution and a major national government. A major national government has an obligation to give rights to its people, as opposed to a small private school, considering that there are more than plenty of them all over New York City that people can go to.
indeed. i considered signing for the very same reason. but since rob is so terribly lacking in consideration for others, he shant be getting my vote. and while i don't think having him expelled is an appropriate response...which seems to be packer's standard to any type of trouble with a capital T which rhymes with P and stands for pool...t'would be nice for him to suffer some sort of a punishment. perhaps duct taping of the mouth for a month or so.
I considered signing for a few minutes, but then compared this to other cases in which I think Packer has been wrong in taking disciplinary action. From what I have heard (and granted, I'm not very informed about what's going on), the stuff he and his friends have been saying has crossed the fine line between free speech and speech with the intent to cause harm to someone (be it physical harm, or harm to their reputation or emotional state.) They say stuff that specifically targets certain people and certain people's problems. I know we all make offensive jokes and comments, I certainly do, but I think calling someone a cancerous whore, for example, crosses a line. There's no way that could be interpreted as all in good fun. Also, Rob's been spoken to (and suspended) about this other times--it's not as if this is the first strike against him
( ... )
I praise you as the only person who can eloquently state the right arguments against the petition. I still disagree enough to be ok with the fact that I signed it, but you made very good arguments.
I was considering talking about court cases like Brandenburg v. Ohio, but didn't. You can tell that's the only Gov unit I actually paid any attention to.
I signed, but this an entirely pathetic way to fight the administration. I'm on Rob's side--he reminds me a lot of myself, just a lot more recklass and tactless.
So now that Elan has cleared up for me that this is the infamous boy who cried "cancerous whore", I can take a stance on what specifically should happen to him.
I say punish him. Although I believe in private schools allowing free speech, I consider this to be a form of verbal violence. I do not believe that we should be going to a school in a place where people are free to subject us to extreme verbal abuse and humiliation. We are all entitled an environment where we do not have to worry about violence in any way, shape, or form; and to not punish rob would be in breach of such an entitlement.
that's my point. I signed the petition not because I think he shouldnt be punished but rather because I think that level of punishment is too severe and that the school should realize not to jump to such harsh responses.

As for Rob. Is he the one who called Molly a cancerous whore?
