Jean Kilbourne's early work had a lot to do with my aversion to commercial television. My friend teaches a Women's Studies class and wants me to present on Violence Against Women. Isn't she great? She's been at it for a long time too. Huge influence on my when I was younger - God knows I've fought this stuff in my own head my entire life.

The terrifying thing is their is a new generation of young women who have completely internalized the messages from the culture - it's so normalized. 8 year olds trying to diet and lose weight, they are restricting food by 11. Cutting on themselves by 14 when they "fail" at the myth of "perfection."

Makes me so angry to watch it happening, and to listen to their pain.

How many times do i hear now, "I'm not a feminist..."

Nothign makes me crazier than the sentence "I'm not a feminist...". I always finish it for them by saying "but I'm willing to stand on the backs of every woman and man who came before me and accept the rights and freedoms their sacrifices bought me."

When ever this sort of thing gets mentioned I always think back to that Zappa song, "I'm the Slime", where he talks about all the crap on TV. Rather smart song.
