One of my favorite artists, along with Teodor Kittelsen and Gustave Doré - which makes me a walking cliché, seeing as they're The Holy Trinity Of Art to just about everyone interested in black metal and dark imagery... Especially to people like me, who don't really know a lot about art or paintings, and have never bothered digging any deeper into the world of disturbing art. I really wish I knew of other, less "mainstream", artists who are/were capable of creating visions of nightmarish post-apocalyptic landscapes and twisted horror of the same caliber as, say, Beksinski. Any suggestions from Jim or yourself are more than welcome!
hmmm... Caspar David Friedrich has been used for his share of metal album covers but I don't think most blackmetal fans would understand his work. In terms of gritty aesthetic I can hightly recommend Lukasz Banach if you're not aware of him:
