So you may have noticed at some points today my layout goin all screwy. That was me basically trying to find a way around the new LJ commenting system, which is ugly and stupid and ugly. I don't want to load 90 icons everytime I want to comment! Just let me choose from a list! And why would you take away the ability to preview comments? That's just ( Read more... )

songposts, yaoi can be kind of dumb

THAT REMINDS ME OF WHEN I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR TV SHOWS THAT DID NOT CONTAIN VAMPIRES OR SEXISM
AND SOMEONE SUGGESTED SUPERNATURAL

AND I TOLD THEM I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN A PILE OF SEXIST CRAP
AND FOR SOME REASON THEY BECAME OFFENDED

YOU NEED TO BE NICER WHEN THINGS OFFEND YOU
THINK ABOUT HOW BAD IT MIGHT MAKE SOMEONE ELSE FEEL IF YOU TOLD THEM YOU WERE OFFENDED!

I wish that subject lines still existed. The subject of this response would be 'Holy crap'.

Urgh, those comments. Yeah, that's another instance where I wish that the people who made the comments would have to hear their words being read back to them. Maaaaaybe then they would realize that there are some disturbing issues with what they're saying.

Saying that rape is necessary to plot development is like saying a ten-pound honey ham is necessary to construct an intricate house of cards. Although in terms of intricacy, yaoi plots that I've bore horrible witness to tended to be severely lacking.

And saying that rape is slightly disturbing is like saying that a double homicide involving kindergarteners is slightly tragic.

Good heavens.

I'm.. going to go douse my head in some liquid bleach.

edit: changing icon to a more appropriate one

OCCASIONALLY rape can be necessary to plot development but only if the plot then moves in a realistic way, ie, the victim doesn't then go and fall for their rapist. Legend of Blue Wolves is about as close to that mark as I've seen a yaoi/hentai hit since they filled the rape quota with a third party. But yaoi/hentai is generally only tangentially related to reality so they're not really a good example.

Law and Order Special Victims Unit might come closer, or on Criminal Minds when the unsub of the episode is a serial rapist. In both cases the rape is treated as properly horrible, so it's a valid plot device.

Hmm you do have a point there. Forgot about ol' SVU. Yeah though, I guess it is valid as a plot device as long as it's treated realistically and as 'This Is Bad And You Should Feel Bad'.

I just see it used too much elsewhere in stories as "Hmm how can we make the main character's life more tragic.. JUST ADD RAPE." X(

Rape - Tragic flavour seasoning for YOUR character.
In SVU it's as much a way from them to get away from the traditional MURDER investigators that TV shows seem to take.
But yeah, it kinda needs to be the whole "Rape = bad." Not "Rape = THE PATH TO TRU LUV"

Subject="Noooo! My quippy subject lines!"

Wow, okay, my first impression of this new comment layout was that it seemed to be designed for a smaller resolution than I'm using, because everything looks oddly spread out, but apparently it looks like this at every resolution (or at least every one my monitor can handle). I'm wondering what in the world the web designers were thinking. (And seriously, no preview? What the hell?)

Well it also vaguely stretches out my 800x600 screen so thanks for that LJ, it didn't do this before. IT'S NOT ANNOYING OR ANYTHING.

You mean people still using LiveJournal might also still be using low monitor resolutions? Who could have predicted this shocking turn of events

well to be fair from my unofficial poll i am apparently the last person on earth who uses 800x600

BUT STILL IT WORKED FINE FOR ME BEFORE

"I have to say though, the rape scene in KB is slightly disturbing because of the sounds that Souichi makes while getting boned, but that's just me."
"but that's just me."

What a weirdo, being disturbed by a scene where someone gets drugged and then raped while repeatedly screaming at the rapist to stop.
