This morning - this early, early morning - I sat in the Burgh Lobby and listened to Stephen King's On Writing, on audio CD. It's a wonderful description of his early years, his first publishing experiences, and some hints he directs towards writers regarding the craft.

At one point in his dialogue, King relates the following:

I discovered this Truth for myself, soon after coming here for school. Too often people search for a meaning for life, a purpose to make their existence bearable. Those of us who have that meaning realize that it's not life which needs a purpose, but it's the purpose itself which powers life. When I realized that I was already what I sought, and I just needed to emphasize that, the world turned inside out. It's a great revelation, to be sure.

Ayn Rand discusses this in her non-fiction collection of essays (which was probably the best way I could have been turned on to non-fiction commentary), The Romantic Manifesto.
