Likely mode of egress ... Randy and I were talking about this, and both of us remembered that the dwarf door to the basement was left open much of the evening. I wasn't thinking about this in terms of Ripley, but I was thinking of it in terms of mosquitoes, so I closed the screen door twice after it had been left open. But even when "closed" it had quite a gap, and Ripley could easily have pushed it open if he had had a mind to.

yeah, thank you... As far as we can tell to this point, Ripley was in the house during the clean up phase sometime after midnight, and that door was closed during that time.
in fact, the last time i clearly remember seeing him, he was standing by that back door, staring out longingly; he was very clearly inside when that door was closed.
So you closed the wooden door while he was looking out the screen door? Sorry to press the issue -- but I do think he could open the screen door by himself. (And I would like to believe that he didn't actually get out that way.)
