I'd be willing to bet it's the very fact that you've been out of work so long. The employers think you're a slacker. It's a nasty catch-22 :P
If I was you, I'd make up some fake job, and get a friend to pretend he was your boss when they call for references. Sometimes you just have to BS a little.

It's rough all over hon. It's going on 3 years for me.... Jobs are just that hard to come by, employers are being overly picky these days.
