Following a question from tvor I’ve typed out the 30 “cinemas best kept secrets” list from Empire. I don’t agree with it - but if anyone has a lost classic they want to point me at - be my guest.

Film buffs only beyond this point. )

i definitely agree with 'meet the feebles' and 'the taking of peckham 123' - i haven't seen a lot of the others, although i would definitely add 'kissed' to the list... its about a story about love and necrophilia. its one of the most beautiful films i've seen, but not many people i've talked to about it had heard of it.

I'm v fond of TOP123 - it was one of the first 'serious" films i can remember watching as a nipper.

I will look out for kissed, since it's about death it should be right up my morbid alley.

PS: the fact that you disabled comments or yr last post worried me a little - shant pry, but i'll wish you well.

i saw the taking of peckham 123 a few years ago... it happened to be just starting on channel four as i sat down flipping through channels looking for something to watch. there wasn't anything else on, so i decided to watch the film - i'm glad i did as i really enjoyed it. meet the feebles is hilarious - peter jackson is my friend james-the-film-buff's favourite director, and i spent hours and hours with him at the video shop where he worked watching peter jackson and kevin smith movies.

i think you'll like kissed... other films i really like are requiem for a dream [no other film has ever left me staring at the screen while the credits rolled, unsure of what to do], withnail & i, the labyrinth, fight club, beavis and butthead do america [ahem], um... and probably others i can't remember off the top of my head. but i suppose you've probably seen most of them ( ... )

I loved What's Up Doc when I was a kid. Great screwball comedy.

Interesting list. There are some I haven't heard of, there are some I haven't seen, but most of them I have, and whilst they were undoubtedly good, I would dispute their apparent greatness as this list suggests. It seems to be a list of good films that never went anywhere.

As for suggestions, difficult really; i.e. think of a good film that you normally wouldn't think of (well duh). Most films that didn't get recognition didn't get it for a reason. There's a lot of films by foreign filmakers that people have rarely heard of, Argento and Kurosawa are obvious examples. Likewise a lot of manga gets overlooked because it gets written off as a cartoon.

But my recommendation is The Mosquito Coast. I thought the story was great, the production was great, the acting was superb especially from Harrison Ford, and it's one of the very few films where I've actually cried at the end. I really liked it the first time I saw it and I liked watching it again and again.

The Harrison Ford film that time forgot! I'd even forgtten how much I liked it 'till you mentioned it. Good call.

I think last supper is too well known to be "lost"? But it's a hoot. We all love Mr Dafoe.

(I have Subway on dvd if you get the urge again)

oh and pppppps: If Jarmusch has made a better film than Dead Man I haven't seen it.

Ooh...of course me actually getting the DVD would have to include us actually meeting up...I shan't hold my breath, but it would be lovely to see it again.

Um...Last Supper didn't have Willem Dafoe in it.

It's this one I was talking about -

that is a hil-air list. I mean, Q? nutshell story: when I was a girl fetus (10-13 years of age) we (meaning my mother and her mother) frequented a video store that had a little "adult" section in the back. I always tried to peep underneath the trellis they had seperating it from the "norm" section. anyway, they had the best movies, not least because the owners ended up being incredibly great grindhouse/horror directors, one of which being Q (with this crazy cover of a giant tail peeping over a nest with a blood-dripping Q over this scene). they also had some others on this list (Martin to me was a big snore but maybe I should give it another try) but Q was the most fascinating for me with that bootleg Frazetta cover.

PS: this is parentheses night. (xoxo)

Time to stand up and be counted for Q
Larry Cohen is king of the B movie and I could watch Michael Moriarty do nothing all day. Plus it has the Chrysler building!

hil-air list. people have been pinched for less.
