Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but I find it upsetting how it seems like a lot of people view America simply as a means to making money. Some use the euphemism "land of opportunity" and "the American Dream". So... a better life is a six-figure income huh? Some people are going to the U.S. not because it's a place they want to live in, but because they ( Read more... )

i disagree. i love capitalism. it's the whole reason my parents came here from taiwan and why all my father's side of the family came and have prospered. the fact htat capitalism does give u an opportunity is the beauty of it and why it's practical. you have to work hard while be vigilant, determined, and motivated to do your best for the future. your comment that capitalism gives material wealth in lieu of morality is completely unfair. you have to admit that without wealth, there would be no such term as moral obligation to give to those less fortunate because everybody would be miserable.

that wasn't really my point. i don't know how to word it, but what I was trying to say was that I don't like how so many people seem to want to go to the U.S. simply because they can make more money there. Of course, this is only my perception and I can't back it up with statistical figures or concrete proof. What else should the U.S. be viewed as, if not $$-land? Well, how about a place with a less-corrupt government, making an effort to be "democratic", relatively much freedom, etc. My parents also came from taiwan, and clearly my childhood has been much more "fortunate" than my parents'. Yearning for a better life in the U.S. by itself is not a problem, but when in fact you don't care about the U.S. other than the fact you can make money there, I think that's an awful viewpoint ( ... )

paraphrasing the words of an indian immigrant i read the other week

i'd rather live in a country where the poor are fat.

and u can also get skin cancer. cue the blame on another industry.

and i dont think you're not getting my point.
okay so you mean money isn't the ultimate evil but it still is evil because of its allure.
im saying you can't blame money the way you are.

you ask for a democratic and less corrupt govt. capitalism has given us that. there will always be cheaters and abusers of the system. you can't let the few give u a jaded view.

"when in fact you don't care about the U.S. other than the fact you can make money there, I think that's an awful viewpoint. "

yes i think u can make money in america, you can also have all those other things like democracy here. most of the people that come here come for both. if they only wanted the former, they can just go to china.
