I have a little break in the action of my annual fall climbing trip.  I'm back at the coffee shop in town nursing a cappucino before heading out to climb a Classic Desert Tower.  So I'll tell some tales of Day One: Working Out tout the kinks.

Air wretching... )

I love civilization. *huggles all horizontal surfaces* I don't know how you do it, girlfriend. I'm have no head for heights. But it sounds like you got through some sort of sound barrier of rock climbing, so good for you!

I'm glad you play it safe, though. You want to be able to tell the tale.

Well, I'm back home safe and sound and huggling the horizontals too, LOL.
Yes, I broke through a personal barrier-- a fear of falling-- which I've had tagging along after me all ten years I've been climbing. After I exorcised it on day one, I felt so much better. Four splendid days of climbing ensued, including a banner day 3. Here's to enjoying mugs of hot drinks! :)

Gasp! I love the deadpan way you tell this story.

one’s body very much likes to believe it is

Er - no, really? I'm trying to imagine what it must be like to have that much adrenaline pumping. I think I'd expire on the spot. I'm in awe. And glad the Boy Wonder didn't get puke in his hair!

The funny thing is that I accepted two years of income from the company that makes those camming devices, so I saw them get tested every day to 3,000 lbs, yet falling still scares me. No matter how bloated I may feel when my period rolls around, 12 of those should definately keep me locked into the cliff, eh? That's why I joke that my head is lying to me. Ah, but fear keeps us nice and safe. And so it's a good thing in it's own way.

It's good to see you back around. I'm sure you're still working up to 100% though.

Wow, Zia - how do you do it? I will never be one of those people who can exercise or push their body to the point of throwing up. I suppose I simply don't have the drive that high level athletes need to be the very best. I salute anyone that can do that. My husband has done this a few times through the years. He routinely pushes himself to the point of severe discomfort with his runs. I have a certain comfort zone with physical activity that I will stay within, no matter what, LOL.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!!

Oh yes, the boys on my college athletic team used to have names for this activity. I used to just roll my eyes at them thinking they were being immature again. It takes a certain (tough) mentality for sure, and I get it but rarely to be honest.

My big limiter in climbing has always been a fear of falling, so there was something really good about pushing that fear out of my system on the first day of the trip. It enabled me to have a great rest of trip. I wish I were bold as some, but alas...
