Well, depending on how flippant you're in the mood to be, I'd say your answer might be friendship, and might be the human capacity to mess things up for ourselves-- but I'm willing to be corrected on either count.

Or maybe just be told all you have faith in is flippancy.

What do you think of motherhood-- or fatherhood-- in light of that? If a parent claims to care for their child more than themselves, are they lying and/or deluding themselves? Or nuts?
