Some thoughts on marriage and such.

Marriage is an antiquated ritual derived from religion that simply has no place in contemporary society as a legal process. Gay marriage? Civil unions? All "marriages" should be civil unions. The government has no place in religion, which is what Marriage is all about. "God said..." should not be an argument in which laws get passed or vetoed ( Read more... )

This is why I have for a long time been a supporter of the Alternatives to Marriage Project (ATMP) www.unmarried.org

I would add that the government should treat all people equally for tax purposes. An individual is an individual. (Is funny -- for many people there is a marriage bonus and for some a marriage penalty. I think there should be neither.) Nothing wrong with marriage, just with government involvement in marriage.

(Of course that said there will still be the need to protect the interests of children, but this can be done in many ways.)
