if you set your cam to "push" the film speed as well, youll get better results ie-in low light 400/spd film..push it to 800 if your cam has those capabilities..
and what kind of camera are you using, firlm or digital? i know how you feel about the flash - my nikon, although i love it dearly, has one of the brigtest flashes on the market, and has the ability to white out everything. you need to just poke around in your camera settings, if it's digital, and find settings like "indoor" or "low light" or "nighttime" in order to adjust the shutter speed. and remember, anytime your'e taking pictures in a low-light setting, the smallest movement can cause blurryness.
and.. btw.. that first picture?.. if that's a picture of your apartment in poland... i officially hate you in the most complimentary way possible ;)
oh! hell yeh, if it's a nikon coolpix, look for the "indoor/party" mode in your "Scene" settings, or you can also just adjust the sensitivity in your regular image mode to match what would be the film speed you'd use (200, 400, 800).
i dont think there's any actual way to dampen the flash, so i go out of my way to not use it? plus - the less you lose the flash, the longer the charge on yoru batttery lasts!! :D
