ESL teacher is a fun job!! I had tons of ESL students my first two years of teaching. Now I have all white kids and no little multicultural rainbow. The little Asian girl in my class now doesn't count because she thinks she's white too because she's freaxing surrounded.

Two of my favorite ESL students were refugees from somewhere weird in Russia where their parents had to be indentured servants (that's the gist I could get from the mother) until they came to the states. The little boy ended up becoming QUAD-Lingual because he spoke Turkish and Russian when he came and then picked up Spanish and English at our school. He was freaking awesome. I wanted to adopt him so he could take care of me in my old age and pay all my bills with the big bucks he will make! His sister was special ed, but working with her was SO rewarding because when she got a concept or new phrase, she was SO excited. Her first English word was hula hoop!!! (We were at recess.)

ESL teacher is a wonderful and fulfilling job. I did that at my church in Atlanta. The suburban town in which we lived has the largest Bosnian population in the US and that combined with the growing Hispanic and Vietnamese populations made the ESL program that is now 10 years old very popular. We averaged 75 students every term. I taught beginner level (those who speak absolutely no English). I regularly had about 5 languages represented in my class. I felt a real comraderie with them, as it is exactly in that sort of class that I learned German 30+ years ago.
