Back from New Orleans

So, we're all back from our week helping out in New Orleans. While we were down there, we worked on 5 different homes, all of which had already been worked on before. Mold was less of a problem for us than other groups because the belongings in the houses were already cleared out and the houses had gotten a good amount of air. We just needed to ( Read more... )

when you were down there, did you hear anything about FEMA's plan to close the base-camps in New Orleans housing volunteers on April 10? i've been posting info on it on my blog at http://pursuingtzedek.blogspot.com/

Thankfully we stayed at a local church rather than at a FEMA camp, but I heard that FEMA had camps for volunteers and that they ran the places basically like military bases, with strict rules and curfews and such. I hadn't heard that they were going to close them. These reports seem to be credible though, and that's really bad. Obviously they need all the help they can get and volunteers need someplace to sleep. All I can find on FEMA's site is this, talking about the camps and saying they are "committed to supporting" volunteers:

Yet another cost-cutting move, I guess. They are under a lot of pressure to cut back on the waste no doubt, but this is not waste by any means. I'll spread the word around to the rest of our team.
