Good Source for Cheaper Beef

I'm looking for some sources to get beef for $1.99 or less a pound. I need about 50 pounds of meat total. I've been watching the grocery stores for sales but I haven't seen anything yet. The beef I need can be chuck roast or any kind of beef which cooks well in a stew and the price is good. Sam's was disappointing with beef chuck roast at $2.58 ( Read more... )

Did you check with the butcher guy in Carrboro who's name I can't remember but he's on the corner of Jones Ferry and Greensboro and near weaver street market?

Chuck's I think? Ask G.

Yeah, it's Cliff's - but I don't remember them being cheap, just able to get things like Duck. You could call though, they're really nice - 942-2196.

I would also call Tom Inscoe Wholesale meats - not sure the quantity you need, but they're over near my work. Haven't ended up buying anything from them yet, b/c I've been lucky with sales, but...919-544-1250

I've heard Compare Foods over on Avondale is cheap, but it's not in the best part of town.

Also, I have a membership card for Costco - I wasn't planning on going up there in the next week, but if you want to call them and see what they have, email me and I'll give you my membership # so you can pretend to be me. If they DO have something, I'll be happy to go up there with you.

yep, call Tom Inscoe... they're really really nice, I've bought from them a couple of times. IIRC, I got bone in pork shoulders for less than 50c/lb, so it's certainly worth asking them :)

Call Idonea for advice. She's the queen of cooking piles of food and coming in way under budget.
