Now on with the story…

Barty turned his back to Remus Lupin to change into his Halloween costume. Remus was there because even though Barty had his soul restored to him, they didn’t trust him. Remus was his guard to make sure Barty didn’t pull anything. Barty was willing to obey with the rules, even though they were pretty strict. He was surprised to be invited to the ball, but Remus told him it was because of Barty’s good behaviour.

He had no idea what the costume was because they were chosen at random from numerous boxes and once they were chosen, they couldn’t swap them. He bit his lip and lifted the lid of the box, that was sitting on a bench in front of him, hoping that it wasn’t something stupid like a giant duck or something. He reached in and pulled out a elaborately decorated red jacket, with gold piping around the edges and buttons, with a red shirt underneath. He shrugged his shoulders, set the jacket aside and reached in again. This time he pulled out a pair of black cropped trousers. He smirked and pulled out a pair of what looked to be black knee length boots. He placed the boots on the floor and stripped his robe off and stood in his black underwear, trying to figure out what the costume was supposed to be.

The door opened and Harry walked in. Harry glared at Barty. Barty supposed he deserved that, seeing as Barty did try to kill Harry in his forth year and Harry didn‘t believe that Barty was reformed. Harry set his box down and Barty craned his neck to see what Harry had gotten. Harry ignored him and instead spoke to Remus. “What have you got, Professor?” Harry asked, turning to face his professor.

Remus was clad in black leather, complete with black leather duster. “It’s a little hard to see,” he said, with a smile, exposing sharpened canines, “but I think I’m a vampire.”

Harry smirked as he figured out who Remus was. “I think I know who you are. The question if it’s before chip or after.” he reached into his box and pulled out his costume. “What the…?” he asked, holding up the costume for the other two men to see.

Barty bit back a snicker as he recognised who Harry’s costume was supposed to represent. “Well, hello,” he said, with a laugh. He eyed Harry critically. “You know, he’s a bit taller than you, don’t you? And the eye colour is all wrong.” he asked as he pulled on his costume’s trousers.

Harry glared at him. “And what do you know of it?” Harry challenged Barty.

Barty just smirked as he slipped in the red shirt and buttoned it up. “So many buttons,” he muttered, as he slipped on the ornately decorated jacket.

“Now, Barty, no teasing Harry,” Remus scolded Barty with a smile.

Harry glared at him and started humming a tune as he slipped on his costume, a black leather outfit, his hair all spiked up. “Who are you supposed to be?” he asked Barty.

Barty shrugged. “I have no idea,” he replied as he sat on the bench and put his boots on. He reached into the box and pulled out a black necktie. “You two look good,” he commented, eying the other two with a smirk. “Damn there being no mirrors, I can’t see what I look like. I bet I look a mess.”

“Shall we go?” Remus asked. “Barty, you look fine You too Harry.” It was the first time he had seem Barty in a colour other than black, since his school days. “You should wear red more often,” Remus commented.

Barty suddenly looked nervous. It was his first time out in public since his restoration without any form of disguise. He usually wore a mask which covered the top half of his face and he had heard rumours that he wore it because he was hideous to look at. Those comments hurt Barty and he itched to hex them but he was without a wand and he had a spell on him to prevent him hurting anyone. He could fantasise about it though which always brought a smile to his face.

Harry glared at Barty and stormed out of the room ahead of the two older men. “well, come on then.” he said.

Remus, sensing Barty’s reluctance, smiled at him. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.” he said, trying to make Barty comfortable. He believed in giving Barty a second chance because it was in his nature, but if Barty messed up, Remus would take no prisoners.

Barty licked his lips in nervousness and nodded slowly. “Okay,” he said shyly, wishing for something to hide behind. “Ready when you are.”

After a short detour back to Barty’s room, to fetch Barty’s mask because Barty admitted he wasn’t comfortable without it, they finally arrived at the Great Hall doors. Just before Barty could push open the doors, Remus grabbed Barty’s arm and pulled him to look at him. “I want you to take that mask off at some time during the evening.”

“But if I don’t want to?” Barty challenged. “I’m not ready to…”

“I want you to,” Remus replied, as he opened the door and pushed Barty through into the Great Hall. “Besides the old Barty wouldn’t let a ball stop him.”
