American Apparel, or Hustler's protege?

Okay, I know American Apparel never claimed to be the answer to Abercrombie, but I suppose I took them for that upon the Memphis location's opening. It seemed as though they were doing the same thing for the different crowd, providing staples for the hipster's life. I mean, you've got to know who you're going to end up catering to if you advertise ( Read more... )

I had to look down at myself to make sure I wasn't wearing any AA before leaving this comment. I'm not. Having said that, A-FUCKING-MEN. Read up about Dov Charney. He's a pretty colorful piece of shit, sleeps with the models and employees, jerks off in the middle of interviews, etc. Oh, and he's not Catholic. Jewish, actually.

I agree with you, and I think a lot of their photography is lame BUT I do enjoy their products and have for many years now. (well at least their hoodies and t-shirts.) I could make the same argument with the half naked dudes in hollister, it's the old addage that sex sells.

Dov Charney is the guy who runs the company and he's a total perv, which is probably why 90% of his photography is incredibly sexual. He was even involved in two sexual harassment cases I believe.

I don't want to sound like Andy, but American Apparel is kind of the biggest pile of hipster shit one could possibly stumble into. I guess the models hired for to pose for these advertisements weren't rigidly directed. Did they intend for the shots to look candid? Personal? Impromptu? Honest? Does that add any content to the image? I don't know. I never have money, anyway. I have built up an immunity to advertisements. Either way, the kids still love their $15.00 flourescent green jersey t-shirts ... Kind of the same way everyone seems to love photographing powerlines set against a blue, partly cloudy sky, half-naked self-portraits, or girls in babydoll dresses, posed in the wood whilst wearing animal masks and holding balloons ( ... )

It will be called like, post-nostalgic homality. I always knew that I would have hated to have been around during the abstract expressionist movement, but now I fear I may be entering into its reincarnation.
