Ant Population Explosion

Ant problem is much worse this year. I've been trying a little of everything. Mrs. Meyers lavendar countertop spray for quick zapping, though I'm told Windex also works well for this; those little bait discs; Raid. I like the Chinese chalk, but it's hard to find because it's hazardous (duh) for kids and pets. Porn and drugs? Available anywhere. ( Read more... )

I find Terro traps to be decently effective, although you have to leave the ants alone for a while and let them swarm the traps. The material in the trap is essentially sticky syrup and borax, which isn't deathly poison but does eventually kill the ants when they take it back to their nest and gorge on it.

For immediately ant clearance in areas where I can't leave them and don't want to spray poison (kitchen counter-tops in particular), I have a citric acid spray that smells like oranges. Spray, leave for a minute, then wipe up. It discourages the little pests for a while.

Windex works instantly, is easy to clean up; and (mostly) harmless for counter tops.

OK... I'm the kind of guy who doesn't chop off weeds, but pulls 'em out by the roots. Same for ants. Ya gotta go w/ a good set of eyes and some patience. Follow the trail for however long that takes and find the nest. Then with the zapping.

I've been told that pouring club soda into the nest asphyxiates the queen, thus halting the onslaught (not personally verified as yet). I assume ur not dealing w/ Fire Ants where the club soda treatment is supposed to be most effective, but it may work, and club soda is a bit cheaper than other ant treatments.

Give 'em Hell!!

Diatomaceous earth around your foundations keeps the ants from coming in. Totally safe for pets, kids and easy to find at your local Home Depot or equivalent in the pool supply area.

One capful Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile soap mixed in a litre of water - on plants and the surrounding soil once a week repelled sluigs and snails, along with earwigs, aphids, spider mites, ants and mealybugs.

And there are several natural non-toxic bug sprays
