Saturday morning’s paper had an unexpected surprise in it; an advertisement for a real live honest-to-goodness gen-u-wine Software Developer position. “Holy shit!” I said to myself, “What’s this doing in here ( Read more... )

Me scared, too. I've been job hunting for near 3 months now, with an occasional sniff. Also putting a renewed effort into my writing. The more scared I get, the worse my effort level at job hunting, though my phone and e-mail have been ringing with actual job stuff and some job prospects ( ... )

No shit about that. This SS nightmare is just incredible. We spend money on just about everything else we can think of - including Bush's fookin' government supported Christian charities - but we can't fix Social Security.

The funny thing is that if I were anywhere but The Frozen North, a job wouldn't be anything I even thought about. Of course I'd have a job. No question. It's just that it's really hard to get motivated to go work some crappy job for next to no money when, in fact, the bills are getting paid every month.

Yeah, well, the thing that most Americans are to stupignorant to figure out is that W doesn't want to fix SS (unless you mean fix as in castrate) - it isn't even broken. He wants to dismantle it. Everything he says is a lie, and everything he does is for the benefit of corporations and the investor class. So yes, naturally, in Bush's America the safest thing one can do is to make as much money as possible, and live far away from any likely terrorist soft target areas.

OK, here are the reasons you should not do it:
uhh... uhh... I can't think of any. Oh wait, here's one: maybe there's some talentless nerd in the UP who needs the job more than you.

Here are the reasons you should do it:
1. You like computers
2. You get to learn Java and/or Unix; learning new things is fun and intellectually stimulating, and a SW job in Mqt where you actually get to acquire new skills is like a gift from God.
3. You don't need the job, so if it sucks, you can just quit.
4. You don't need the job, so even if it doesn't suck, but you decide you'd rather write, you can quit whenever you want.
5. (Don't take this the wrong way - just a little rant.) People with no kids don't know how easy they've got it. There's no reason why you can't both work and write full-time.
6. $$$$$$$$$$

No worries, I don't take the kids thing the wrong way. Why in the hell do you think I don't have kids? Because I'm well too aware of how much time and effort they take!

You both bring up good points. Of course I can write on the nights and weekends, if I really want to.

A lot of this angst I think is from the many discussions Mr. Aba and I have had about my job(less) situation, and what to do about it. The writing thing came after much discussion and decision making, and when you put that much effort into a decision sometimes it's hard to give it up.

I'm not going to worry too much more about The Job at this point. They haven't called me, and for all I know it won't work out for a variety of reasons. It was only in the paper for 2 days, which stinks of "we have an internal applicant but we have to go through the motions of advertising the position." But who knows? Maybe it will work out.
