A few weeks ago I was flipping through the new issue of Artforum magazine, not because I enjoy it’s unbearably snotty academic tone regarding everything from Guston to finger-paint, but because it had an article on the recent new wave of French films, what they in turn called the New French Extremity. In a nutshell, with new filmmakers working ( Read more... )

A. I'm not down with the new New Wave of French films, if only because most of them are made by idiot provocateurs like Noe or Breillat, neither of whom have a thought in their useless heads besides how best to jar the audience. This wouldn't be a problem if their films didn't seem convinced they were trying to do something else; I can deal with shock for shock's sake, but I cannot deal with shock for shock's sake that masquerades as something meaningful. Trash.
B. Bel Ami's boys are beautiful, but I almost wish they'd give up their coy little 'ooo, I am having so much fun now, yes?' blushing act in favor of slaping each other around and spitting on each other. How hot would it be to see the Bel Ami boys get REALLY dirty? I'd like it.

A. I'd have to agree with you at least part way..."Irreversible" was pure unfiltered horridness; but i really wanted to see "Fat Girl," and didn't think "Romance" was all that bad.

Switching away from the French, did you see "Audition?" In terms of shock for the sake of shock, that was enough to similarly offend me. Almost as bad as the german "Funny Games," which caused a friend of mine to walk out of the apartment upon it's conclusion, and forced him into a bout of depression for 2 days. Dramatic little cry-baby...

B. They should totally have one Bel Ami series where you get to see those guys pull off the diffusion from the lights, and just start going at it long, hard, and rough. I forgot the name of the movie i've got that involves spitting, but i remember it being pretty hot...maybe i'll write an open letter to the Bel Ami people and see if they're open to the numerous possibilites.
