I'm not panicking, but it did make me realize that I need to archive or back-up my journal. I feel like a failure as a library school graduate that I haven't done so before now.
As far as I know, the easiest way *is* to use an external site like LJ Archive or LJ Book. LJ itself only lets you download a month at a time and doesn't include comments. The external sites have much more functionality.
I'm not really panicking (though I will be a bit irritated if it shuts down this soon after I bought a permanent account), but I did do a backup. I can't remember which external site it was, but it was super easy, Brett had sent me the link. I can forward it on to you if you wish.
I've only done the frist one as the other one said there were too many people accessing it (what a shock). If you go to that first one, click on the .exe file. It was very easy and super fast...my 7 1/2 years of nonsense all downloaded in about a minute. It has some interesting plugins also, I liked the one that shows the ranking of what words you use the most.

I immediately thought of you and your permanent account when I first read the layoff story and all the OMGPANIC comments.
