As many of you know, the Canadian government will soon vote on whether to legalize Same-Sex Marriage nationwide. Most of us had the feeling that it would pass with a comfortable margin. Now that the matter has been declared as a "free vote" for non-Cabinet Liberal MPs, that isn't so clear any more. There is a lot of opposition to this, which is ( Read more... )

There's this charming gem about her on the equal marriage website

Said during the election that she is vehemently anti-abortion and wants to repeal hate crimes protection for LGB people.

Yikes :(

i just emailed my mum & sister & asked them to pass on the info to other people in the area. i think gallant is a lost cause, but i think voicing your opinion is still important.

isn't gallant the one who compared abortion to beheadings in iraq?!

I'm not very familiar with her, but judging by other comments she's made, I wouldn't be entirely surprised.

Even if she's a lost cause, I like to think that people in the riding might think twice about re-electing her if they knew about the kind of disgusting comments she's making :(

I was happy to see my MP supports equal marriage. I actually didn't know that until now.

Yay! Both my MP here and in Halifax are NDP, so I'm extremely lucky & happy in that respect! I think I want to send them "thanks for being awesome" cards.

Who is your MP?

Hehe. I only know him because I remember seeing him on CPAC and thinking he looked like a little cartoon! I can only surmise that he's at least partly an ok dude on this basis!

You and me both :( It breaks my heart that there are people out there who think it's important to actively prevent others from getting married, but what makes me almost even more angry is that a clear majority of Canadians support SSM, so many MPs have no problem voting against it.

UGH UGH UGH :(

Saskatchewan is so funny: NDP provincially all the way, and RIDICULOUSLY CONSERVATIVE federally.

I wrote an email to my MP a couple months ago but I think I'll follow that up with a phone call. Grrrr.

I was so surprised! I was so upset going through Alberta, and then finally got to Quebec where I was all, "GOD BLESS YOU FOR MAKING THE COUNTRY SANE!", and then Saskatchewan, in the surprise move of the day, goes and breaks my little heart.

According to the equal marriage website, phone calls are much more effective than emails.

In political terms, it is fair to say that a meeting between a constituent and an MP would be worth 50 personalized letters or 100 telephone calls and a phone call would be worth 1,000 emails.

This is such an important post, Pamela. Thank you for writing it so articulately and for compiling this list. I've linked it on my own journal; I hope that's okay.

Ugh, it makes me so upset. SEVEN PROVINCES ALREADY. Hello?!

Goodness, It's definitely and most certainly okay!

I want lots of people who normally shy away from politics to be encouraged to write / call / visit their MP! Sometimes the threat of not beingr re-elected is the only thing that can get through to them!
