Boys don't make passes...

Someone stole my bike! I left it locked outside for an hour, and when I went back to retrieve it it was gone! If anyone in Montreal sees someone around on a blue cruiser with reflective hearts all over it, please PUNCH THAT PERSON IN THE THROAT! This sucks. Someone please take me bike shopping in the morning, because even though it was in rough ( Read more... )

Ack! Pam, I can't believe your bike got stolen! Weren't we just talking about the frequency of bike theft in Montreal? Yikes. :((( I hope you find a new one today!

Yes, wow, I can't believe this sign exists. Way to perpetuate awful stereotypes. It makes me wish I hadn't caved and bought into the whole contacts over glasses thing back when I was a wee insecure 13 year old. Sigh.

But, I'm glad the stencil worked out! I'll be excited to see the final product!

Oh! I found out about a couple used bookstores around McGill. I haven't spent much time in that neighbourhood...if you're up for it maybe we could go exploring this week! :)

We were just talking about bike theft! I know it's common here and every time I go to unlock my bike here I'm always partially surprised that "it's still here and not stolen!". Still! This is a sad day!

I was wearing glasses when I saw the sign, but it did make me feel slightly yucky inside for having caved to contacts. But I think we shouldn't feel too guilty, because there are tons of valid reasons to choose contacts, such as being able to wear sunglasses, that they don't fog up in cold or steam, and that sometimes glasses just don't match the outfits we wear on dates with boys :/

The finished product itself is kinda working out less well than I had anticipated. It's a little... gloopy? Maybe it will have to be for-show and not for-use.

And I'm definitely up for used bookstore exploring soon! I think I'm going to devote today to bike shopping, but maybe tomorrow or Friday if you're free? Or some time this weekend?

i just realized that my lack of dates may be because i wear glasses and rant about Marx all the time. Thanks Juliane Moore. Thanks.

No, no! Julianne Moore's case obviously cannot be made universal, because who actually likes listenening to ANYONE talk about Plato. Borrrring! Am I right!

sorry about your bicycle, dear! i hope you find another one soon!! also, about that sign? what the heck! she has made other unsettling statements as well, but instead regarding her weight. i know many, many girls who dumb themselves down completely to impress a guy. it's completely disturbing..

Not that I've ever paid a tremendous amount of attention to Julianne Moore, but I always thought she always seemed pretty level-headed as far as Hollywood actresses go! Eeesh. What kinds of statements has she made about her weight?

And mmm, so many girls (and perhaps also boys?) dumb themselves down in general, because there's such a pervasive cultural idea that Smartness Is Not Likeable. And I think that's garbage!

i read a quote of hers once & it mentioned that she deprived herself of real food and made most of her meals out of snack bars and her snacks out of yogurt in order to keep up with the hollywood thin girls. pish posh! i guess you can't always believe what you read, though.. although your quote find reinforces the fact that she probably did say this.

i have seen smart boys act dumb around certain girls too. either way.. it's sad that one would waste a whole brain for a piece of ass!

you should go into that store and have a word with them! also it seems counterproductive from the company's standpoint to advertise against glasses. they make a much larger profit on glasses than contacts. the poster should be like "i had big ugly thick glasses but now i got new stylish ones with super lightweight thin lenses and now i feel awesome"
arg. i'm just sort of surprised that advertisers are *still* on that stupid girl thing.

I do intend to go have a word with them- I would have yesterday, but I was bringing ice cream home and it was getting very melty. I have my priorities!

And you're right, it does seem bizarre for a store that sells glasses to perpetuate such an idea about people who wear them. I think I might go in under the guise that I'm looking to buy glasses (because I actually am!) and work the angle of "well, you just lost a customer from your terrible advertising!". I feel like that might be more effectvie.
