Oh! I like Wyndham! You should check out "Day of the Triffids."

"Day of the Triffids" was the one I was specifically thinking of. "Crysalids" takes place many many years after society breaks down, "Web" just has the band of misfits in a somewhat demolished land, although with the chance to escape back to civilization and I don't think any of the others work at all.
