You know what I really love? Postapocalyptic and society-rebuilding stuff. I don't even need a plausible excuse, I'm willing to just jump in and go, "Okay, great. The world got destroyed. What now?" "Day of the Triffids" was the one I was specifically thinking of. "Crysalids" takes place many many years after society breaks down, "Web" just has the band of misfits in a somewhat demolished land, although with the chance to escape back to civilization and I don't think any of the others work at all.
