So at work today I took a relay call. For those that don't know what a relay call is it is a call where someone who is deaf dials into a system that is text based and an operator then calls us and will relay what the customer types to us. This one really sucked. The person I could tell was fraud because the wanted to immediately buy 5 prepaid ( Read more... )

No, TTY operators will not engage in a PSO call.

Please remember when doing a TTY call that it is easier to do short statements rather than long ones. You want to ask for clarification often. =) Also, remember that the operators are not always the best spellers or grammaticians. It is easy to have meaning misconstrued by that. (I remember trying to tell my Dad about my mom's death through a TTY operator. Not FUN!)

I was pretty sure of it but I thought it was pretty funny anyhow. Anyways on the short sentances it is kindof hard because I do not know when I should get the customer to say something. On a normal call I do not want the customer to say anything while I am trying to tell them some things. Also for QA purposes I have to spell everything back especially since the operators wouldn't spell anything to me.

Wow, I think you may have gotten the most evil relay operator ever. I know the intention is for them to be as transparent as possible without killing themselves, but that's insane.

The other one I've heard about is that relay services (especially on the net but I imagine it applies over regular TTYs too) are a common channel for fraud, probably because you don't have to worry about sounding uncertain or nervous the way many people do when they're trying to pull something on you.

The sad thing is, I couldn't figure out at first why they'd be ordering prepaid phones in such an obvious fraud setup -- most cell phone fraud I see deals with reselling the phone, service and all; this one sounds more like the caller's just planning on unlocking the phones (yay GSM) and reselling those.
