Day 3 - Favorite Villain/Monster/Alien/Baddie of the Week

I truly love frightening monsters. It may be blasphemy among Who fans to admit this, but I’m not a fan of the classic monsters. I enjoy them in the context of the episodes in which they originated, but they seem to fall flat when they’re reused in the new series. Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Autons, and others are all based on the fears of the decades in which they were created and I’m not sure they translate well into the new series. For me, they always come out looking cheesy relics of Who’s past. They’re fun and I enjoy (mostly) the episodes in which they appear, but they don’t scare me.

It’s the unknown that frightens me. That is why I find the entity in “Midnight” so terrifying. We know essentially nothing about it, not even if it’s malicious or just picking up on cues from the humans on the bus. We only know that it can apparently live in a kind of sunlight that obliterates any other form of life.

The good folks at dwrewatch brought up an interesting idea that the humans in “Midnight” are the real monsters. While I like the concept, I disagree wholeheartedly with it. I find the episode to be an interesting study of human nature, but I don’t find the characters to be monsters. After all, the entity in “Midnight” first kills the driver and the mechanic when it attacks the bus. Again, we don’t know the motive of the entity, but the reactions of the characters in the bus are natural and understandable when two people have died already. Their reactions are also cowardly and shameful, but that’s not the same as monstrous.

“Midnight” contains some phenomenal acting. Most noteworthy are Lesley Sharp as Sky Silvestri who becomes possessed by the entity and David Tennant as the Doctor. Their performances were some of the best acting I’ve seen on TV ever. Their ability to sell this unseen and unknown entity as something completely terrifying make it my favorite of the new series.

Stop it, you two. You're scaring me.
