What Lynn is leaving outhowtheduckAugust 4 2008, 19:30:19 UTC
We have 3 weeks to play with, so I propose we do the bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner, and the bachelor/ette parties which Lynn is apparently skipping over to get to the wedding day. Hopefully as the week goes on with the wedding day, we will get to see who the actual wedding guests are and we can include them.
Bridal showerhowtheduckAugust 7 2008, 02:30:19 UTC
I thought it would be fun to put Thérèse’s mom & Thérèse’s younger sister there, as inappropriate visitors in the same way that Elly and April showed up to Thérèse’s baby shower. By the way, the indirectly told story is that April and Jeremy run into these two while they are walking the dogs. Thérèse’s younger sister flirts with hapless Jeremy, while April fumes that Jeremy doesn't stop her. That sets up a conflict for the bridal shower.
At the actual bridal shower, Thérèse’s mom is going to make a stink about how she never gets to see her granddaughter and we get a lot of good general snarking about Anthony's supposedly good single parenting and how little Francie never sees her grandparents. Hopefully, we will have the complete Anthony bio soon, so we can snark that too. As for April and Thérèse’s younger sister, there should be some good snark opportunities from the perspective of someone who is essentially April, if April were Thérèse’s sister and not Elizabeth's.
Grandpa Jim at the endhowtheduckAugust 15 2008, 03:12:37 UTC
This is going to be a tough one. If the predictions are correct, then Grandpa Jim is going to take a dirt nap next Monday. What will poor April do when she foresees that happening on Liz's wedding day?
Re: Grandpa Jim at the endaprilp_katjeAugust 15 2008, 10:46:08 UTC
I was puzzling through that last night, too. Clearly, she'd want to do something to prevent that from happening. I guess either she needs a failed attempt (but how without throwing off everything else that is to happen on the day?) or something that establishes definitively that there's nothing she can do about it? Or maybe even Gramps himself also having the same premonition and urging Apes (somehow!) not to intervene because it's his time and he's not enjoying life anymore?
OTOH, part of me wonders if the spoiler is a bit of a red herring. As some have pointed out, the person wrote "a dying man," and arguably, Jim's been "a dying man" for some time now. Maybe he'll be in hospital again but not dead (thought that would be cruel).
Also, I'm way curious about the hint that next week ends on a "meta" note. Hmmmm.
Re: Grandpa Jim at the endhowtheduckAugust 15 2008, 16:21:31 UTC
The meta note ending comment makes me think we are not talking about the coming week, but the week after which Lynn has already said in interview is a Sunday strip detailing the future of the Pattersons and that April will be going to the University of Guelph. If it's the last week of the strip, then what you have is:
August 18 - 23 - dailies of the wedding. Liz says "I do" on the 23, then repeats it for the Sunday strip on the 24th.
August 25 - Grandpa Jim goes down. August 26 - 30 - Reaction to Grandpa Jim or final words of Grandpa Jim? August 31 - Sunday showing the future of everyone (Meta ending) September 1 - relaunch

I thought of that right after I posted
( ... )
It is pretty safe to assume For Better or For Worse ends with the Sunday "see the future of the characters" strip, since Lynn Johnston has said it herself in public and the strip is already submitted. Should April's Real Blog do a similar thing?
From a practical standpoint, if Lynn starts going chronologically with her reprints then it will be 12 years before she will produce any new April stories. If you continue modern, you would have to snark every strip as if it were a remembrance of someone from back in 1979 - 1980.
Re: The endinghowtheduckAugust 16 2008, 02:00:35 UTC
With April's Real Blog, the conceit is that you are telling the real story, so we could tell the real story of the future, while snarking the strip story.
Re: The endingaprilp_katjeAugust 16 2008, 13:14:01 UTC
I'm intrigued. I guess we'll have a better idea once that final strip runs, but say, for example, the strip says, "April will receive her acceptance to Guelph during her senior year, go on to get her DVM, and establish a veterinary practice, that we should jump forward to when April's in practice and treat that as our present-tense?
Jeremy getting nervous about his relationshiphowtheduckAugust 18 2008, 19:03:23 UTC
Just to let you know, Jeremy Jones is getting nervous about his relationship with April, because if there were ever a time to trot out Gerald again, the wedding reception is it. The timing of the wedding is so short, I would be a little surprised if Lynn wasted a strip showing Gerald and April wax philosophically over their own potential marriage; but just in case...Jeremy is getting a little nervous in preparation.

I wondered what this was about. Good point about Gerald. Normally, I would have expected him to have been at least mentioned in passing by now if he were to be expected at the wedding. Though with Lynn's current story telling, who knows? (I hope we've seen the last of Gerald, but Lynn seems to be in secondary-character send-off mode, so it's likely I'll be disappointed.)
