Some people say that the weather here is a spectator sport. I totally believe it. Hey, any dog people out there?
I am, as I may have mentioned, dogsitting. The other pet in the house is a pocket mouse, who lives happily in a terrarium. One of my lovely little charges is somewhat obssessed with this mouse...any help with how to keep the dog away? I can't tell if she has any training whatsoever. Sometimes, typos reveal rather interesting program functions. I just learned that holding down the shift key while hitting "return" actually makes Excel move *up* a row.
Thankfully, no data were lost, but wow - I'm actually pleased with having learned a new trick. ;-) -

When I started grad school in 2002, publication of a genome sequence (with initial annotation and analysis) was a big deal. Huge! High profile! It's all too true that fashions follow a cycle, isn't it? Even toys and books seem to follow this pattern, or at least I've seen a lot of toys/books at stores that I remember from my own childhood.

Has anyone else been reading the new NY Times blog being written by Dr. Olivia Judson? I'm actually pretty pleased with it, but it has made me return to my thoughts about science education, journalism, and just plain education in modern America.

As some of you probably know, I like to participate in fundraisers for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The AZ chapter has two "walks" per year, one in Phoenix and one in Tucson.
