I am four weeks into my new job.  I work with money in the financial district; I am not proud.  But- my building is beautiful and I am on the 30th floor and can see all of Manhattan from my desk.  I can look up and see uptown, which is really incredible .  And I get to see the progress of the 9/11 memorial on my way to and from work.  So, I guess ( Read more... )

A boy grabbed my hand and pushed a thumbtack into the cushion of my palm, using both hands to press the tack as hard as he could.  I gave my two weeks notice. A boy peed and spit in a cup and threw it at me.  I was glad I gave the notice. I am told I am strong when the boys try to attack me.  I keep my cool and don't back down.  If I had known I would be in such an environment as this for 50 hrs I week I don't know that I would have chosen this job.  It is making me believe I can't do the good I want to be doing.  Today I'll fight for myself.  Like I always have to.

I have been so hard to love lately.

It is because I am going through so much at work.  The boys I am trying to help at the detention facility absolutely hate me.  I can't do anything to gain their trust because I am female and I am white.  They make gun gestures and aim at my head.  They surround me and steal things from my pockets.  Co-workers ( Read more... )
