You know, a little vicarious catharsis would really hit the spot right now.

Comment and let me know the last book you read (or, if books ain't your thang, the last movie you saw) that made you weepy, and why. And don't worry... I won't laugh at you.

My god, man. Biggest literary bawlfest of my childhood was Sounder, which is like Old Yeller but less chipper. So I know what you mean.

Silly as it sounds, I've always been put off from the book because of Oprah. I really should get over that....

lots of things can set me off these days, so keeping that in mind, i just saw "the heart of the game", a documentary about an all girls' highschool basketball team in seattle. and yes, i cried.

as I tend to weep easily these days. The world is such a weepy damn place.

The last book I read that made me truly weepy in a "its a sad and beautiful world" sort of way was "The Crossing" by Cormac McCarthy. Its part of his border trilogy that includes "All The Pretty Horses" as well. Its a coming of age story about a boy in New Mexico, but a cried my eyes out at the fate of the wolf.

Oh yeah, and I have been listening to a bunch of Edith Piaf of late as well.

As will quickly become apparent, canine misfortune in print form makes me go a big rubbery one. And can I borrow some Edith Piaf?

How about Dances with Wolves? The scene where Two Socks gets shot to death by the soldiers... I usually have to turn off the movie right there (and I never get any further).

"Memory and Dream" by Charles de Lint - a tale of not-exactly-unrequited love between two girls, one of whom is a painter, and one who's a writer of fairy tales. There are all KINDS of heartstring-twanging "but you're a girl, I can't *really* love you!" misadventures. Gets me every time.

also, and you have full permission to laugh at me for this, when I saw the movie "Brokeback Mountain" without knowing the full plotline first, I cried on and off for *weeks* (with breaks for water ingestion and meetings and such. Luckily for me, my officemate is literally a sadist, so doesn't mind random girly tears.) Goddamned queer cowboys.

and hey, didn't you mock me recently for admitting listening to that band? ;)

I think you told me about Memory And Dream before...

I'm mocking myself, even! (They're a good band, though, even if they're goth as fuck.)

Out of curiosity, is being that filmically weepy annoying for you, wonderfully cathartic, or what?
