Netbook

So I'm looking at getting a netbook. The laptop I have now is bulky, old, and on it's last legs (the AC adapter connection is fucked up so it's constantly losing the power connection). I don't need a portable design workstation. I just want something that's good for watching videos, browsing the web, maybe some poker, and is lightweight, has ( Read more... )

You nailed it. Working returns desk at Comp, I've seen more than my share of Acers, Lenovos, Gateways, and Toshibas come back, but I have yet to see even one of our Eee PCs get returned. In fact, that's the model I got Kev for Christmas (except in black). A very nice netbook for a good price.

Whichever you decide on, http://www.skinit.com/ has some spiffy clings to customize it.

Oh, and avoid Dell like the plague.

That looks like a nice little model, and it'd be a great little 'net computer.

Are there any Eee's that come with Win7, though? Win7 works great on low-power systems, and would be more future-proof than an XP laptop. (Unless you were to put Win7 on it yourself, in which case disregard.)

I had been looking at the Asus Eee PC 1005HE. It is still the one I would like to eventually get. Good price, good specs, decently sized keyboard, amazing battery life. Not sure if they are loading them with Windows 7 yet.

Correction: The HA model (like the one you linked to). The HE model only has a 3 cell battery.

This sounds like a stupid thing, but really check the keyboard layout before you buy one. There are versions that have Fn and CTRL reversed and others have the right SHIFT key moved a position to the left or smaller than usual. Sounds stupid, but it can be really annoying. Most of the Netbooks have the same specs, so it's mostly the exterior you'll be looking at (sturdiness, sexiness).

Check the Samsung N130 or the more expensive (but 12") NC20. My friend has the N130 and it's good stuff - mostly because I hate glossy. The Lenovos look really really sexy but I don't think it's worth the price though.
