Yesterday I went for a walk in the woods. This was a walk during which I intended to find the perfect fallen birch branch (or perhaps a largish twig) to transform into a wand. It's a beautifully quiet winter day, snow is continuing to fall, and I'm well over 50 years old now....so I suppose reminiscing is to be expected. Today was such a beautiful fall day that I had to get outside, to be out among the trees and by the river. After a stop at the brewing store to buy the necessary bottles for our latest batches of wine (a blush and a white)I found myself heading to the Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve. I was driving home from the forest preserve when this amazingly beautiful willow tree caught my eye. It has been a good day, and the sighting of this tree was the perfect grace note. Earlier I watched geese landing ( Read more... )

Yesterday Doug and I went to visit his folks, and we rode the motorcycle to do so.  We decided to take the long way back home....the very long way back home through a small village and along a country river road.  It was a cool, overcast morning but several maple trees were already shining in their brightest fire-orange leaves.  I've also noticed ( Read more... )

Yesterday I spent some time out in the back yard garden harvesting tomatoes, peppers and a few pumpkins (already!).  Then I moved on to harvesting basil, sage, spearmint, black peppermint, and anise hyssop.  It's a small garden, so very crowded as Doug's tobacco easily takes up one third of the space, and here and there I  noticed weeds I had ( Read more... )
