[Prologue][ Chapter 1][ Chapter 2] [Chapter 3] [Chapter 4] [Chapter 5] [Epilogue]

Prologue:

Ask Ninomiya Kazunari to use one word to describe his life, and he’ll say ‘dramatic’. Every time he paused and thought about his life, the word ‘dramatic’ always comes to mind. He might even say that his life is more dramatic than the theatrical play ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Since young, Nino knew he was the son of his father’s second wife. Actually, he wasn’t supposed to know, but somehow, he chanced upon his mother sobbing in the living room, complaining to his aunt about her husband, his father. Not knowing what was going on, Nino simply stood there and listened to whatever his mother said. And by the end of the conversation, Nino knew that his father had another family out there.

Nino knew he wasn’t to talk about his father’s other family for it upset his mother so much it made Nino feel terrible. So for fifteen years, Nino kept that secret to himself, even his sister didn’t know about it. For fifteen years, Nino was aware about his step-family, if you can call them that, but the only thing he knew about them was that their family name was ‘Matsumoto’.

Subconsciously playing with the pen in his hand, Nino tried not to think about that mysterious family his father had and tried to concentrate on his essay, besides, there’s really no point in trying to figure out who they were, his father had made his choice - them, and Nino had hated him and his other family since.

Suddenly, somebody tapped him on his shoulder, jolting him out of his day dream. Spinning around, Nino saw Sho smiling gently at him.

“Sho? What are you doing here?” asked Nino, stupidly. Of course Sho was here for him!

“I asked you out to the movies, didn’t I?” smiled Sho awkwardly, “the show starts at 4.30pm, so if we don’t hurry, we might miss it,”

Nino looked to Sho then to his unfinished essay. That homework was due the next day and Nino had planned to finish it while waiting for Sho’s classes to end, but he ended up day dreaming instead.

Deciding that it wouldn’t be his first time handing in his homework late, Nino shoved the pieces of paper into his bag and left the school with Sho by his side, both of them talking animatedly about the movie they were about to watch.

In no time at all, Nino found himself leaving the queue at the snack bar, a cup of soda in one hand and popcorn in the other. Sho had gone to get the tickets and Nino was busy scanning the long ticket queue snaking through the entire lobby of the cinema. With his eyes fixed on the sea of people, Nino wasn’t paying much attention to where he was going, and when he thought he had spotted Sho, he rammed head first into something.

“Ah!” yelped Nino, as his head collided into something. The impact caused his soda and his popcorn to spill all over him and the floor.

Sighing at his soaked and butter-stained jacket, Nino looked up, wanting to apologize to whoever he had crashed into. When he lifted his head, he saw a guy who looked no older than him but had a more mature look. Judging from his appearance, Nino figured that he was a student as well. That guy had soft curls in his lush black hair and surprisingly thick eyebrows, but what captivated Nino the most was the look of concern in his dark brown eyes.

“Are you okay?” asked the guy worriedly.

“I-I’m sorry,” apologized Nino, bowing deeply while flushing red at the embarrassing thing which he had just done.

Nino was about to walk away when he realized he had no control over his feet. For some unknown reason, his body just refused to move away, not matter how much he begged them to leave so that the handsome stranger wouldn’t see him gaping stupidly.

“Here you go,” said the unnamed guy, holding out his handkerchief to him, “you might catch a cold if you stand there dripping wet,”

Looking at the handkerchief which was offered to him, Nino felt his heart thumping madly. He had no idea why he was acting this way, it felt awkward yet calming. Nino ignored that unknown emotion and reached out to take the handkerchief.

Nino muttered his thanks and proceeded to wipe his face dry of soda. From the corner of his eyes, he saw that guy looking at him with a hint of amusement in his eyes, making Nino blush an even deeper shade of red.

“Nino!” he heard Sho’s voice call him. Soon enough, Sho appeared at his side with a pair of tickets in his hands.

“I see you found your friend,” remarked that new guy casually, “I better be going,” with that, he walked off and soon disappeared into the crowds.

Staring at his retreating back, Nino felt a strange sensation. It was almost as if he didn’t want him to go, but why would he? That guy was a stranger who he had just met minutes ago! Speaking of that guy, Nino remembered that handkerchief in his hands. He wanted to go after that guy, but he couldn’t even see his shadow amongst the crowds, so in the end, he stuffed it into his pockets and planned to return it when he had the chance.
