I know that there must be someone else out there is running the new Windows Vista. I am only running it because I bought a new laptop after Vista was released. While I like the look and some of the features, it appears to be quite the pain in the ass ( Read more... )

We're not running Vista, nor are we recommending it to our clients yet (we sell Dell computers as part of our business). I had a short correspondence with one of the beta testers, and he indicated that only about 60% of his software would run under Vista. There have been a number of warnings from various quarters regarding backwards compatibility with previously-released applications, which is largely a result of the fact that Vista represents an essential redesign of the entire system. We - and most of our clients - are too heavily invested in software that works just fine to be monkeying around with a brand-new operating system, especially one from Microsoft. While this one is admittedly getting much better reviews than previous versions, Microsoft has long held a reputation of releasing new Windows versions that are not ready for prime time, so to speak.

Well, on general principal, perhaps. On the flip side, though, it was long past time that they stopped trying to bleed the last bit of value out of their old - and seriously problem-ridden - technology, and move on to something that might have a remote chance at working properly. Of course, with the usual public "post beta" phase of consumer testing - although in this case, the non-compatibility of your existing software is apparently more of a backwards-compatibility issue than an operating system problem.

I agree with hilltop that you might be well served to try some alternatives to Acrobat, and I'd be glad to to talk to you about that, but some of the applications may not lend themselves well to open-source alternatives ( ... )

Unfortunately since we are such a small organization, it was the guy at Best Buy that sold me Vista. The problem is that when I had to buy a new laptop they were ALL being sold with Vista pre-installed. I have XP and it is loaded on everything except my computer. I was finally able to get my case management program and Quickbooks to link yesterday but I had to remotely connect to my server and run the programs from there in order to make it work. Obviously, the server is still running XP ( ... )
