STATS

B A S I C S
Name: No-Name (or Shadow, as others often call him)
Player: RM
Caste: Night
Concept: Thief Dude
Motivation: Kick ass, take names, and build a thief empire of awesome. Also, severely dislikes being in anyone else's power and will go to great lengths to avoid it. A touch power-hungry in general. He has a vendetta against noble/merchant families in general, the Hsiung merchant family (one of the most powerful merchnat families in his area) in particular.
Anima: Glowing violet-white eyes, plus patterns running along his skin, which glow as well.

Backgrounds
Backing: 2. No-Name runs his own street gang and is slowly clawing his way up through the ranks of his local crime syndicate. While he's nowhere near the top yet, he intends to get there. Eventually.
Resources: 2. He can afford his equipment and gets a pretty good take from his thieving activities, but he hasn't saved up much yet.
Artifact: 2. The Orb of Dusk and Dawn. He stole this baby when he was eighteen and has been keeping it close to him ever since. He also drew his Second Breath during this experience.
Influence: 2. No-Name's group of thieves is beginning to get some small measure of notoreity in Nexus. They're feared by rich and poor alike, although the poor view him as being more of a Robin Hoodish figure. Most of the time. Depending. People who know him only through his thieving activities know him as Shadow.

[DM's Choice]
[Ladarius]: No-Name is generally good to his contacts in general, but he feels a lot more loyalty to Ladarius than is strictly necessary, for reasons he can't quite put his finger on. While No-Name's first priority is, as always, to look out for Number One, Ladarius easily slips into the Number Two category. He's occasionally offered assistance or paid a bit more than usual for Ladarius' services, but don't actually point that out to him. He'll deny it completely.
Honor Amongst Thieves: Within his own group of thieves, No-Name's pretty damn loyal. While this might not be terribly unusual among friends or allies, it is for thief gangs around Nexus. He has no sympathy for anyone who stabs him in the back, but up until that point, he'd do a lot for his in-group. Above and beyond the usual.
Picking on Someone His Own Size: No-Name has real sympathy towards those who are weak and/or mistreated by the strong. Though he's usually pretty good about focusing on whatever thieving he's doing at the time, that sympathy is probably the one thing that can distract him from a job.

I'm whiting out most of No-Name's early history just 'cause it's something he keeps pretty secret (or doesn't know about, himself); I don't really care if other people read it or not. It's more for myself so that I can keep track of what he does and doesn't tell people, and also for people who don't necessarily want to see the background until it comes up. (I'm thinking secret-seekers like Ladarius.) Up to you! I trust everybody to keep IC and OOC info separate, you're all mature people and I love you, etc. and so forth.

No-Name was born ... well, not as No-Name, obviously. Rather, Hsiung Kuan-Yin was the sixth child of a powerful and wealthy merchant family in Nexus. Though originally from the Southern corner of Creation, the Hsiung family moved to Nexus about a hundred years ago and has been flourishing beautifully ever since. Most of their trade is strictly legal, although that doesn't stop them from having certain...side businesses as well. The Hsiung family was (and still is, to some degree) composed ot two main lines: the "main" family, which was in power at the time, and the "branch" family, which ... was not.

Kuan-Yin's childhood basically sucked. Though he was never technically neglected or abused when he was a kid, his relatively low place in the main family meant that he was often overlooked or set aside. He was given some semblance of formal education starting when he was five, but he never showed the genius aptitude for trade that his older, more favored siblings did. His early days mostly consisted of long hours shut up inside the Hsiung compound, not bright enough to be recognized as being useful, but still forbidden (like all the Hsiung children) to make contact with the outside world. When he turned eight, plague rocked the main family, killing many of his older family members and weakening the rest. He himself was affected by the fever as well, which resulted in a severe weakening of his own vision (although it did not actually blind him).

With the main family weak from plague, the branch family (which had remained mostly unaffected) took the opportunity to strike. Mysterious accidents removed key survivors, while branch family politicians quietly transferred more and more control to themselves. Within a year or two, the branch family came into power--and Kuan-Yin's situation went from bad to worse. With most of his immediate family dead or run out of town, the branch family kindly took him in as "one of their own." The result was three years of neglect and some physical abuse, until Kuan-Yin took matters into his own hands and fled.

Nexus is not the best place for a naive thirteen-year-old to try to survive on his own. In some ways, he was lucky that he got picked up by a local thieves' gang rather than any number of other, more dangerous professions. He never told anyone his real name, opting instead to go by his thieves' nickname, Rat. Though he found that he had a natural talent for thieving and stealth, he was still the low man on the totem pole. Part of this was due to his damaged sight, although he found that with some practice, he could make up the difference with his listening skills. Survival meant looking out for himself at all times and getting by with only a few scraps to his name. He never thieved quite well enough to impress his crime boss, no matter how much he brought back.

And then, when he was eighteen, Rat got a lucky break. His local crime boss caught wind of a particularly shiny artifact being brought into town via the black market and decided that Rat would be a good minion to send out. As luck would have it, the group handling the transaction was none other than the Hsiung family. The actual theft was an incredibly difficult task, but with a little luck and some memory of how his family used to work, he managed to swipe the Orb. It was at that moment that he took his Second Breath -- and things finally started to go right for him. He decided not to turn over that shiny he'd just stolen. Giving the proverbial finger to his former bosses was dangerous, to say the least, but he found himself handling matter with so much more power and grace than he'd ever had before. The taste of power was doubly intoxicating to someone who'd basically been stepped on all his life. He swore that, from this point on, no one would ever have power over him. And to seal that oath, he shed his thief nickname and decided that he didn't need a name at all. Names could be power, after all.

As an Exalt, No-Name quickly formed his own group of thieves. Though the group started small and slow, he's clawed out his own niche in Nexus' underworld and hasn't had many major challenges since then. They're known as the Shadows (to those familiar with them), with No-Name being the Shadow himself. They'll steal from just about anyone, although the high percentage of noble or merchant targets (with the major trading family Hsiung as the most common target) and his tendency to pick poor people for his gang gives him something of a Robin Hood reputation. (It is mostly undeserved.)

Other than that, not much is commonly known about him. He shares few details even with his in-group, and fewer still with Ladarius, if just to frustrate his almost-friend. (ilu Jon rly. :D) Physically, he's about nineteen years old, although he will happily lie and say he is younger or older, depending on which serves his purposes better.

Brief Appearance: No-Name has a fairly lank, lithe frame, which, while not overly skinny, sometimes makes him look smaller than his 5'9" height. His complexion is quite dark, with ebony-dark skin and jet black hair, which he cuts only rarely and haphazardly. Face-wise, he has high cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes with startlingly pale pupils, violet in hue. It is the only really remarkable trait he has; otherwise, he is an utterly unassuming-looking person. Scars include a slight kink in his nose from where it was broken, plus the odd knife scars at various points on his body.

In terms of clothing, No-Name dresses practically and for warmer weather, if he can at all help it. A vest and pants usually serve him quite well, as long as he's got something tied around his waist to allow him to carry pouches and the like. When not out among the general populace, he wears a black armband around his right upper arm, which serves as a marker for his own thief gang. He often wears a simple necklace, made out of black cord, as well as several earrings (primarily on his right ear).
