Does anyone understand why this holds true (for most observed natural data sets)? The explanations I've read leave a lot to be desired, from my point of view.

OK, here's something that has been bugging me for a while: if I want a certain temperature in my car and I achieve do that either by turning the air conditioning down really low and the fan very low, or by leaving the A/C significantly higher and turning the fan up, which is better for the car/my fuel economy?

Why is it that my wife can walk so fast that I can't comfortably keep up, but I can jog/run much faster than her? Why is there an inflection point in our relative speeds as we move through the walk/jog/run continuum?

Been playing (do you play Sudoku?) this a bit lately and I have to confess the most interesting thing to me about the game is how they determine whether or not a puzzle is solvable and unique given the numbers provided ( Read more... )

Played Colossus online for the first time in several months today and had 2 Minotuars at the start of my 3rd turn thanks to some over-aggressive computer play.

I guess the G-8 has agreed to cap global warming at 2 degrees (Celsius). So that's comforting.
