RIP Matthew "Smithers" Smith

Sep 23, 2009 10:51

This morning I received the news that my good friend Matthew Smith, known to us in London as "Smithers" has died in a road accident. I have tried to inform everyone who knew him by phone where possible, but if you were a friend of his and myself and Peter haven't been able to get through to you then maybe you'll see it here ( Read more... )

Thank you for saying that so well. The world has lost a good, intelligent and gentle man.

He was utterly lovely - I only really met him the one time, and instantly roped him into a crazy scheme. He handled it with an enthusiasm and grace that hasn't actually been topped since. I'm sad to hear he's gone.

Matthew was one of my work colleague here at Areva and all the people who knew him were shocked by the news of his accident. It is only later the same day that we learnt that he had died from the accident.
He left his colleagues and specially his friends from the graduate scheme in deep sorrow.
We will always remember Matthew as a great engineer, a perfectionist, an very humble person and a perfect gentleman. He loved talking about his favourite subjects: animé, apple products, science, engineering...; and was always very enthusiastic when talking about one of his favourite subject. He was able to give you a mountain of fact about one subject.
We will miss having him at our table everyday at lunch and will remember him for as long as we shall live.

Well said baz

Smithers was one of the few people I knew who not only wanted to make the world a better place but had the ability and drive to actually do it. A sad loss for more than just his friends and family.
