Chapter 3 “If you don’t mind me saying, that was much better than your piano playing,” Ohno said, smiling. Oh, how Nino hated that smile with a passion.
“Satoshi-kun- ” Sho appeared behind Ohno, looking over his shoulder and seeing Nino. “Ah! You play the guitar, Ninomiya-kun?”
“No, he was just observing it. It’s Aiba’s guitar,” Ohno said airily, leaving the room. Nino stared after him, puzzled. Sho shrugged and smiled at Nino.
“I’m guessing Aiba-kun didn’t tell you about us coming here, huh?”
“Ah...No,” Nino answered, still a little dazed at the sudden appearance and departure of Ohno.
“He invited us here for dinner. Matsumoto is here too.” Sho started to leave the room, when he stopped and looked back at Nino. “Coming?”
“Oh, yeah, right.” Nino quickly stood up and put the guitar back in the corner of the room. He followed Sho down the stairs into the kitchen, where Aiba and Jun were cooking.
“Your parents are out?” Nino asked Aiba.
“Mm, it’s just us five tonight!” Aiba said cheerfully. “Do you think this is a good time to try cooking that new recipe I made recently?”
“Maybe some other time,” Jun answered warily, “We already have enough food now to feed everyone two servings.” Nino chuckled at Aiba’s disappointed face. He then noticed that Ohno wasn’t in the room.
Nino looked down the hallway, at the bathroom door. He went over to it and tried the doorknob without thinking. It was open, so Nino stepped inside. His heart skipped a beat when he noticed Ohno staring at his reflection in the mirror, his expression somewhat tired.
It wasn’t like Ohno.
Ohno exhaled sharply, then turned to face Nino. His face was blank; it was as if the tiredness had never been there.
“Nino..?”
Nino noticed that Ohno’s eyes weren’t exactly focused on him, or anything else. But then suddenly, his eyes did become focused Nino, and he smirked.
“You’re awfully bold, you know. Coming in here.” Ohno laughed softly and breezily walked past Nino, out of the bathroom.
...Weird. Nino frowned, and followed him out back into the kitchen. He watched as Jun tried to get Aiba to stop adding in weird ingredients, but Nino squirmed internally, feeling Ohno’s eyes on him.
“I’ll go play a game,” Nino announced, going up to Aiba’s room. He turned on the game system and started playing whatever game was in there, trying to get Ohno off of his mind. Trying to stop wondering why Ohno hadn’t told Sho that he did play the guitar.
“I don’t get that guy at all,” Nino muttered to himself, taking his anger out on the monsters in the TV screen. After a few minutes, Nino turned the game off in frustration. It wasn’t really helping him stop thinking about Ohno, since he imagined every monster as the guy.
Nino sighed and took a glance back at the guitar in the corner. Why did Ohno lie? He frowned. Well, he might as well willingly think about Ohno by now.
But even that was confusing. Nino didn’t understand his feelings about Ohno, so he couldn’t understand his thoughts. When he was alone, Nino kind of wanted the older student with him. When Ohno was there, Nino really wanted to punch him hard. Repeatedly.
Finally giving up the internal battle in his head, Nino got up and went back into the kitchen.
“Ah, Nino, right on time,” Jun greeted him while putting the food onto the plates. “Help set the table?”
Nino nodded and started to, when he realized Ohno was also helping set the table. He didn’t look up at Ohno though, and continued to do the task. Although he couldn’t help get the feeling that...Ohno was smirking at him. Nino glared back into those laughing dark eyes, almost smashing a cup onto the table (having Jun watch him carefully in return).
“Your eyes aren’t very pretty like that,” Ohno whispered to him.
“Why do you care?” Nino hissed back. He was all but glad when they were ready to take their seats, only to find that the only seat left for him was right next to Ohno.
So of course, Nino wasn’t at all surprised when he felt Ohno’s left hand clasp around his right hand under the table.
“You don’t like the food?” Aiba pouted, noticing that Nino indeed looked uncomfortable after a while.
“Aah, maybe I’m just not hungry right now,” Nino lied, forcing a smile. “I’ll eat later?” He excused himself from the table, wrenching his hand back from Ohno’s and ignoring the smile on his face. He went outside, breathing in the cool night air. Nino went into Aiba’s backyard and sat down on the swing he had built with Aiba when they were kids. It wasn’t much, and would probably break soon, but Nino liked it.
It was when Nino started shivering and he wondered how long he’d have to stay outside, that he heard footsteps approaching him. Or rather, the crunching of the leaves on the ground, seeing as it was late autumn.
Nino glanced up, seeing that it was Sho. He desperately tried to ignore the disappointment in himself that it wasn’t Ohno.
“How long are you gonna stay out here?” Sho smiled warily, stopping once he was close enough. “Satoshi’s gonna worry if you catch a cold.”
“What- why would he?” Nino sputtered, frowning. He couldn’t imagine Ohno worrying.
“I’m sure you’ve seen both sides of him, right?” Sho asked hesitantly. Nino raised his eyebrows. “I mean, there’s the cute and spaced out Satoshi- the one most people see, and probably the one I know best. But he’s my best friend; I know he has that other side to him.”
“You mean, the perverted Ohno?” Nino sighed, wondering why he had to know that kind of side of Ohno.
“I’m a little shocked at that side of him,” Sho admitted. “But Ninomiya-kun, I know he likes you.”
“Like me? Yeah right, he’s just messing around with me,” Nino muttered. “Turns out he’s not an angel, huh?” Nino laughed softly, remembering how he thought Ohno looked so innocent that first day.
Sho frowned, wondering how to put things. He turned around when he heard a small cough. “Satoshi?”
Nino groaned softly, but loud enough for Ohno to hear. Ohno only smiled, his eyes lingering on Nino for just a couple of seconds more than necessary, Sho noticed. He looked back at Sho.
“I’ll be going back in then,” Sho said softly, immediately understanding what Ohno wanted. Nino bitterly watched as Sho’s back disappeared into the house.
“Nino,” Ohno said, bringing Nino’s attention back on him.
“Oh-chan?” Nino tilted his head a little to the side and smiled questioningly.
“Not cute at all,” Ohno chuckled, raising his hand and brushing a stray hair back from Nino’s forehead. Nino was quick to notice that Ohno kept his hand there, but he didn’t say anything. “I’d say you’re starting to like me,” Ohno murmured.
“Like hell,” Nino replied sharply, shaking Ohno’s hand off.
Ohno realized that Nino was shivering from the cold, and he frowned. “Come on- inside.”
“No,” Nino said stubbornly, shying away from Ohno’s outstretched hand.
“Nino,” Ohno said seriously. Nino sighed softly and took Ohno’s hand, enjoying Ohno’s look of surprise which lasted for less than a second. When they walked back inside, Sho beamed at them but Nino let go of Ohno’s hand, looking so pissed off that the smile was almost immediately wiped off of Sho’s face.
Nino smiled fondly when he saw Aiba knocked out on the couch, his head resting in Jun’s lap.
“So what’s the plan?” Jun asked. “Our host is sleeping- should we just leave for the day?”
“I doubt you can leave,” Nino laughed.
“Well, he’ll eventually wake up.” Jun shrugged; he’d proved his amazing amount of patience once before, so Nino nodded.
“Then I’ll leave him in your care~” Nino grinned.
“Thank you for inviting us over,” Sho said, bowing. Jun laughed and shook his head.
“Stop being so formal! Anyway, Aiba invites almost everyone over a week after he meets them.”
Sho gave one last smile and wave, soon leaving with Ohno.
“What?” Nino frowned at Jun, who was watching him closely. He rolled his eyes when Jun only shrugged.
When Nino left shortly after and started walking home, he unfortunately recognized Ohno walking down the street. Nino swallowed, running after the older boy instead of going through the normal route to his house.
Nino grabbed Ohno’s hand when he caught up, out of breath. Ohno turned and calmly smiled at Nino. “Stalking me now?”
“No,” Nino growled, his hold only tightening. “I just want to know... Why do you know about my guitar playing?”
Ohno didn’t say anything for a while, only causing Nino to become more nervous.
“If you kiss me, I’ll tell you.”
“What?” Nino scowled. “Stop playing around with me!” He dropped Ohno’s hand, and was about to turn around and leave when Ohno came forward to him. Time seemed to slow down as Ohno wrapped his arms smoothly around Nino’s waist, bringing the smaller boy into a hug.
“S-Stop,” Nino said weakly, his face inches away from Ohno’s.
“I’m not playing around,” Ohno said in a tone that sent shivers down Nino’s spine. “After school tomorrow, music room.” He let go of Nino and continued on his way down the street, leaving Nino shivering only slightly.
