Well this week’s lecture was definitely interesting to say the least. The traditional lecture structure was completely thrown out the window - which was nice for a change to have something less mentally demanding, especially after such a long day - 5hours of literature on a Monday is enough for me.

This week we started looking at Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”.

One of my favourite parts of this comedy would have to be the first bit of act 2 - between Cecily, Miss Prism and then Chasuble.

This week we look at Tolstoy’s Master and Man. Master and Man is a story in which most, if not all people, can either relate to or identify with, the mannerisms of the characters Nikita and Vasily.

In our tutorial this week we looked at Matthew Arnold’s The Scholar Gypsy.

We focussed on the ideas that

• the people of today are self indulgent and
• the people of today are trying to have too many aims in life.

In this week’s lecture we looked at Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 65”.

Shakespeare begins with a list of some of the most indestructible items in the world - for example brass and stone.

He then continues and asks the question:

“How with this rage shall beauty hold a plkea,

Whose action is no stronger than a flower?”
