You were not the only one to see it that way. Perhaps it was. I had always thought of it as a person afraid of "nothing" -- a void so horrible that even the spirits couldn't bear it -- and it brings on him a horror with no substance, just pure fear he cannot prove or explain, making him all alone -- which makes it even more horrific.

I love this whole notion-- that the expectation of behing haunted makes the ABSENCE of haunting become scarier than any actual ghost might be!
