I just finished reading a novel, Ways to Live Forever, that moved me profoundly. It's the debut novel from a young author, Sally Nicholls - I think she was only 22 when it was published. This extract from the publisher's website says it all really....

Family outing to Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday to watch EDF cup semi-finals.. Leicester Tigers vs London Wasps (Tigers won yeah), Ospreys vs Saracens (who cares...). We've just spent the weekend introducing our Czech au pair's mum & dad to sight-seeing and picnicking 'English-style' i.e. muffled up to the eyeballs against the cold and sitting in car admiring the rain/hail/gale. I have just twice saved my elder daughter's hamster (appropriately named Lucky) from death by cat. Came downstairs to kitchen, believing all children & rodents to be safely tucked up. Shattered after long day at work followed by 70 mile round trip for riding lesson. That may sound strange but it's worth it - good riding teachers with well schooled horses are a bit thin on the ground. Learning on a horse which responds in the correct way when you get it right (and conversely does not when you get it wrong) is a joy;
