The weather is much nicer. How nice, you ask? Nice enough for the armadillos to be out foraging in the leaf litter of the "hundred acre wood". Lucky found a nice 20 pounder. It was raining hard most of the day. When it slowed, Lucky and I went out for a 2 - 3 mile walk together. Came home refreshed and dripping. Not much competition for walking space when you live on a gravel road in the SE corner of Hickory Cty, Mo.--especially when it's raining. A beautiful afternoon.

Yesterday was an unexpectedly difficult one---our very nice kitchen faucet crashed. Leaking around the spout swivel joint was a combination of aged and worn gaskets. Installed Ubuntu 9.10 on wife's PC as dual boot with Vista, now searching for a way to enable the wireless device so Ubuntu can connect to the router. Rotten luck doing a search for ways to fix the problem and I thought the wireless connection would be automatic as it was in all the other Ubuntu installs I have done. Duh!! I'm lost. Again. Pulled my "defective" live cd out of the trash and did md5sum on the laptop instead of the desktop ---hash returned is exact match for Ubuntu's documentation---rat poop! It is my desktop's dvd/cd drive at fault. No clue why the old ubuntu 8.10 live cd worked in the desktop when these wouldn't, but I think the mysterious problem is narrowed down to ( Read more... )

I found a way to check the downloaded file using the cmd term and md5sum---it returns the exact hash specified by the official Ubuntu docmentation (hash) page. My problem had been not getting into the right directory before I attempted to invoke md5sum ( Read more... )
