Yesterday, after his Robotics class, I told Beekman we were going to pick up some nuts before we went home. He was VERY invested in going home for screentime, either TV or gaming on the tablet, so he did not want to go. He was gretzing and whining, but I said, it will be quick, and then we'll go right home ( Read more... )

I think you did all right. It's hard for kids to learn that the world doesn't revolve entirely around their desires; it's not a fun lesson but a necessary one. With the girls, we had to go through this lesson a couple of times. Sometimes I still have to go through it myself.

As long as he wasn't screaming or doing those shriek sobs that go right down my spine, I'd have been sympathetic. With you, mostly. :)

You brought your upset child into the store to do what you had to do, but you did not do two bad things:
a) Ignored him as if it didn't matter to you what he did
b) Didn't think about why he was upset, and could not articulate it when asked.

Trust me, while I feel badly around crying children, those feelings shift from OH GOD WHY to awww the poor thing yes my ears but awwwwww. And that's important and fine.

*HUG*

It sounds like you both learned something and that's good.

Crying and sobbing are not screaming and yelling. The parent that allows the latter and pretends Their Child Does Not Act That Way is the problem, and a larger one than what you did.

To my eyes reading this, neither did you try reasoning with him as I have seen many a parent attempt, usually with the offer of a substitute boon in exchange for what they are screaming they want. That rarely works, IMO, and makes the parent appear less than a parent.

You and I may disagree on much, but important stuff like this we can see eye-to-eye on ;-D
