At Once Vicarious and Yet My Own..

In the last throes of summer heat, I took Kahlil to the beach. I enjoyed observing his quest to go to the deeper waters and the abundant happiness he experienced from paddling in the water and looking at the tiny fish. How hard it is for us as adults to get so much pleasure from those little things. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the beach and the ( Read more... )

It's so true that sometimes adults need to stop and really look and listen. In seeing our children make memories, we're able to tap into our own.

Children do enable you to tap into the freshness and immediacy of experience and escape the confines of the auto pilot expectations. Isn't it funny how being skilled at anticipating and manufacturing a pleasant experience dulls your appreciation of it?

what a beautiful reflection on being at the beach. i'm sorry for you that summer is slipping away, but happy for me that i'm stealing it from you.

mind you, there's no frigging beaches round this way, aside from fake ones by the lake.

Don't be sorry that summer is slipping away - at 5+ months pregnant I can assure you that I am fully over it and can do without the draining heat, offers of condolence from complete strangers and the bloating. ;o)

Autumn is actually my favourite season. I love that time of year when you start to settle into stuff, the autumnal atmosphere makes for a good day trip to places like Daylesford (too hot in summer), the grass doesn't grow too quickly and covering up with more clothes offers one many more fashion options. But it was nice to end summer on a pleasant note... Mind you, this is Melbourne and it is not beyond the realm of possibility to get some hot days still in April!

ah yes, well you make a compelling argument for autumn in your state! i always feel a bit depressed when autumn comes because it means summer is over and winter is coming. rather a defeatest attitude huh? but i get to enjoy spring for exactly the opposite reason :)

Sometimes I get turned off by the thought of winter but I talk myself into it by thinking of all the positives like cosy heaters, wool cardigans, comfort food and the like. Maybe in several years I can add the thought of going skiing too. I also have to talk myself into spring though cos while it represents the coming of summer and not having to wear lots of clothes, it also gets so windy and stormy!
