Again, a book I'm currently reading (or to be more accurate, just finished two days ago)
The Men Who Would Be King by Nicole LaPorte. I'm a pretty big fan of insider-y movie tell-alls of the kind that Peter Biskind writes, and this one falls squarely in that wheelhouse. I'm so used to reading about movie lore long since past (like in Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls or his more recent Warren Beatty bio Star) that it's strange to be reading movie history that I experienced firsthand in theaters.
LaPorte's tell-all focuses on the meteoric and somewhat self-inflated rise of Dreamworks and its quiet diminishment and fall. Dreamworks made some pretty extraordinary pictures in its time (American Beauty, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan) but it also made some really classic blunders and missteps along the way. The book was slow-going at first, seeming taking 60 pages to set up the initial press conference announcement of the studio... but after that, it rockets along excitingly.
I never realized how much of Dreamworks fates spun on and around their animation output, which alternated between wonderful (Chicken Run, Shrek) and dreadfully dull and stuck in the past (Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Sinbad, The Prince of Egypt).
Anyhow, good book.
