Right now, the book I'm recommending to people is Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (link has back-cover-style spoilers). . It just won the Nebula and the Arthur C. Clarke Award, it's nominated for the Hugo Award this year ( ... )

This sounds good, but "next in the series" makes me nervous! Does it have a cliffhanger?

No, no cliffhanger! The author wraps up book one nicely, I think. I'm just happy to see more of the characters and the universe.

There are so many books in this post I need to read! I've heard good things about Ancillary Justice from other people too, so that's definitely on the list. One day.

What was the last book you read?
Last month I read The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J K Rowling). I really enjoyed it.

Of your favourite books, which one do you like to recommend to people?
I generally try to recommend books to people according to what I think they will personally enjoy. For example, I picked out The Suicide Shop by Jean Teulé for my wife recently, because she has a dark sense of humour.

Which ones do you NOT like to recommend to people?
There aren't any books that I dislike recommending that I actually like. In fact, I'm not sure that there are any that I dislike that I wouldn't necessarily recommend. For example, my friend Clare enjoys Russian history and politics, so I suggested she might enjoy Snowdrops, whilst I'm not enjoying it all that much at the minute (I'm halfway through).

Do you still own any books from your childhood?
Just one - I Don't Want To by Bel Mooney. It was given to me by an old school teacher when I was 5 who said that I was just like the girl in the book. And I was!

What are ( ... )

What is The Suicide Shop about?

Reply

fizzbuzz June 22 2014, 06:48:31 UTC
It's a dark comedy set in a alternate universe where everyone is depressed - the shop caters to selling items to enable suicide and instructions on how to best kill oneself. Everyone hates life, except Alan, who is rather optimistic.

Lol, that counts as an "alternate" universe? XD

What was the last book you read?
Skin Game by Jim Butcher.

Of your favourite books, which one do you like to recommend to people?
Depends on the person and what they like. For fantasy fans, I usually go with Guy Gavriel Kay.

Which ones do you NOT like to recommend to people?
I don't think I have any favourite books that I'd never recommend. I mostly reserve that honour for books I detested.

Do you still own any books from your childhood?
Lots! The Anne of Green Gables series and Narnia and some of Little House on the Prairie and a bunch of others.

What are you reading now?
The Cocktail Waitress by James M. McCain. Mostly because it's from the same imprint as The Colorado Kid, which I really enjoyed.

Have you seen any recent movies that were books?
I don't think I've seen any movies recently.

If you hosted book club, what would you serve?
Assorted baked goods. Scones and cookies and cupcakes. And tea and coffee.

The books you mention owning from your childhood are ones I owned as well. Except I never actually read them :x So I recently donated Anne of Green Gables and the Little House books to Goodwill, as I know I'll never read them, but I saved my Narnia set. I still want to read it, but I'm sad I'm so far out of the demographic now.

Aww! I loved those books, but they're definitely not for everyone.

I haven't reread Narnia in a while, but I think it might hold up okay? Except the religious allegory part will probably be more evident to an adult than it was to me at age eight.

I think I may have liked them if I read them as a kid, but I know I wouldn't like them now, so ah well.

- What was the last book you read? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Hitchhiker's Guide, #2)
- Of your favourite books, which one do you like to recommend to people? Harry Potter, because if someone hasn't read it by now I have a hard time trusting them, lol. Also the Sherlock Holmes books because they are really great.
- Do you still own any books from your childhood? I think I gave most of them to my little brother, but I did keep a few favorites.
- What are you reading now? Soulless, the 2nd book in the Parasol Protectorate series.
- Have you seen any recent movies that were books? Well I just saw How to Train Your Dragon 2 which is apparently based on a series of books.
- If you hosted book club, what would you serve? Tea, of course!

I'm part way through the Sherlock Holmes books. I'm really liking them so far, though for some reason the mental imagery when I'm reading is Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock and Jude Law's Watson.

The Parasol Protectorate is a lot of fun! I keep meaning to read the author's Finishing School prequel series!

I put that on my to read list too but I don't know when I'll get to it! One of my friends says she likes it more than Parasol Protectorate.

What was the last book you read?
Mockingjay

Of your favourite books, which one do you like to recommend to people?
If you like spy novels read Robert Ludlum's original Bourne Trilogy - The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum. All subsequent Bourne novels were written by another author after both Ludlum's death and the success of the movies. If you're familiar with the movies, only the first one even loosely follows the plot of the books.

Also, if you're a fan of Rent I recommend Anthony Rapp's memoir. Though have Kleenex ready for the parts about the deaths of both Johnathon Larson and his mother.

Which ones do you NOT like to recommend to people?
The Bourne novels written by the new guy. They suck so hard in comparison.

Do you still own any books from your childhood?
My mom is the one that has them, but so many.

What are you reading now?
The Count of Monte Cristo. I started it in January - I took a break from it to read the Hunger Games trilogy, which took me a whole week.

Have you seen any ( ... )

I would like to eat a Monte Cristo sandwich while reading The Count of Monte Cristo.

How did you like The Hunger Games? (Were you spoiled? Have you seen any of the movies?)

I think your book club would be very popular.

I was told to read the books first and then watch the movies, so I haven't seen those yet. I knew that Peeta, Katniss, and Gale were all alive at the end of the second book - since they're all in the next movie - but that was about it.

Mockingjay I didn't like as much as the other two because of certain plot points, but I loved the series as a whole.

Booze makes everything more interesting.

I read the first Bourne book and it was so different from the movie. I never go around to reading the rest, though. It sounds like it's best to forget there's any connection to the movies and read them as their own thing?

thanks for the memoir rec; I'll have to check that out.
