A note on why I've been so elusive on this internet of ours all week: on Saturday I started feeling a bit "woozy" and one hour later I was bent over the toilet at work. "No character can match the complexity and changeableness of people as they really are -- then all characterization, however 'round,' involves some degree of flattening"
And

On page 49 of the Ryan reading for this (last?) week, she quotes Northrop Frye as saying "Historians may not like to think of their work as translations of facts into fictions; but this is one of the effects of their works." Distinction of Myth and Fiction
Glancing back over Ryan's thoughts pertaining to the differences between Myth and Fiction, it seemed to me that the difference between the two genres was how many people believed in them. I just finished reading Ong's Orality and Literacy passage and it's a very inspiring piece of work. Not inspiring in the way someone overcoming adversity is, but rather inspiring in the "what is possible" sense.
